- Short Passages
Tang Lu Tong's "Seven Bowls of Tea Poem"
One bowl moistens throat and lips, Two bowls break solitary gloom.
Three bowls search the empty intestines, Only five thousand volumes of words.
Four bowls breaks into light sweat, All life's grievances scatter through pores.
Five bowls clears muscles and bones, Six bowls connects to immortals.
Seven bowls cannot be drunk, Only feel a refreshing breeze under the armpits.
"One to Seven Character Poem: Tea"
(Tang) Yuan Zhen
Tea.
Fragrant leaves, tender buds.
Admired by poets, loved by monks.
Ground in white jade, woven in red silk.
Fried in a pot to a yellow hue, swirling in a bowl like dust flowers.
After night, invite the bright moon; before dawn, alone face the morning glow.
Washing away weariness of all ages, who can boast after drunkenness?
Two Bowls of Tea
Tang. Bai Juyi
After a meal, a nap, then two bowls of tea;
Look up at the sun's shadow, already slanting southwest;
Joyful people regret the day's brevity, worried ones dislike the year's length;
Those without worry or joy, let life be long or short.
Song of Six Sighs
Lu Yu
I envy not golden vessels, nor white jade cups.
I envy not morning court, nor evening office.
A thousand envies, ten thousand envies for the West River water, once flowing down to Jingling city.
Inscription of a Humble Room
Author: Liu Yuxi
A mountain need not be high; with immortals it becomes famous. Water need not be deep; with dragons it becomes spiritual. This is a humble room, but my virtue makes it fragrant. Moss marks climb the steps green, grass color enters the curtain blue. Laughing and talking with great scholars, coming and going without common folk. Can play plain zither, read golden scriptures. No noisy strings to disturb ears, no official documents to weary body. Nanyang Zhuge's hut, Western Shu Ziyun's pavilion. Confucius said: How can it be humble?
Invitation to Wine
Author: Li Bai
"Do you not see the Yellow River's waters come from heaven, rushing to the sea never to return? Do you not see in bright mirrors of high halls, sad white hair, at dawn like black silk, at dusk turning to snow? In life, when successful, enjoy to the full; do not let the golden cup face the moon empty. Heaven gave me talents, they must be used; a thousand gold pieces scattered, they will return. Cook sheep and slaughter oxen for pleasure; when meeting, must drink three hundred cups. Cen Fu, Dan Qiusheng, bring wine, don't stop the cups."
Letter to Admonish My Son
[Author] Zhuge Liang
The conduct of a gentleman: cultivate oneself with tranquility, nurture virtue with frugality. Without indifference, one cannot clarify ambition; without serenity, one cannot reach far. Learning requires tranquility; talent requires learning. Without learning, one cannot broaden ability; without ambition, one cannot achieve learning. Indolence and dissipation cannot inspire vigor; recklessness and impatience cannot cultivate character. Time flies with age, will fades with days, becoming withered and fallen, not connecting with the world, sadly guarding the poor hut, what will be the use?
Short Song Style
[Author] Cao Cao
Facing wine, sing a song; how long is life?
Like morning dew, past days are many.
Bold and generous, worries hard to forget.
How to relieve worry? Only Du Kang.
Green your collar, long my heart.
But for your sake, I ponder till now.
Deer cry out, eating wild apples.
I have fine guests, playing zither and flute.
Bright as the moon, when can I grasp it?
Worry comes from within, unceasing.
Crossing paths and trails, you visit me in vain.
Meeting after long, remembering old favors.
Moon bright, stars sparse, magpies fly south.
Circling the tree three times, on which branch to rest?
Mountains never tire of height, seas never tire of depth.
The Duke of Zhou spat out his food, and all hearts turned to him.
Viewing the Blue Sea
Author: Cao Cao
Eastward to Jieshi, to view the blue sea.
Water ripples, islands stand tall.
Trees grow thick, grasses flourish.
Autumn wind bleak, waves surge.
The sun and moon's journey seems to come from within.
The Milky Way brilliant seems to come from within.
Fortunate indeed, sing to express my will.
