- Short Passages
Tang Lu Tong's "Seven Bowls of Tea Poem"
One bowl moistens throat and lips, Two bowls break solitary gloom.
Three bowls search the empty intestines, Only five thousand volumes of words.
Four bowls brings light sweat, All life's injustices scatter through pores.
Five bowls clears muscles and bones, Six bowls connects to immortals.
Seven bowls cannot be drunk, Only feeling a gentle breeze under the armpits.
"One to Seven Character Poem: Tea"
(Tang) Yuan Zhen
Tea.
Fragrant leaves, tender buds.
Admired by poets, loved by monks.
Carved white jade, woven red gauze.
Frying in a pot reveals yellow buds, swirling in a bowl creates dust flowers.
After night, invite the bright moon to accompany; before dawn, alone face the morning glow.
Washing away fatigue from all ages, who can boast after drunkenness?
Two Bowls of Tea
Tang. Bai Juyi
After a meal, a nap, then two bowls of tea upon waking;
Looking up at the sun's shadow, it has already tilted southwest;
Joyful people regret the short days, worried people dislike the long years;
Those without worries or joys, let life be long or short as it may.
Song of Six Sighs
Lu Yu
I do not envy golden wine vessels, nor white jade cups.
I do not envy entering the court in the morning, nor ascending the terrace at dusk.
I envy a thousand times the water of the Western River, which once flowed down to Jingling City.
Inscription of the Humble Room
Author: Liu Yuxi
A mountain need not be high; if there is an immortal, it becomes famous. Water need not be deep; if there is a dragon, it becomes spiritual. This is a humble room, but my virtue makes it fragrant. Moss marks climb the steps green, grass color enters the curtain blue. Laughing and talking with great scholars, no unlearned men come and go. I can play the plain zither and read the Golden Scriptures. No noisy music disturbs my ears, no official documents weary my body. Like Zhuge Liang's thatched hut in Nanyang, or Ziyun Pavilion in Western Shu. Confucius said: How can it be humble?
Invitation to Wine
Author: Li Bai
"Do you not see the Yellow River's waters come from heaven, rushing to the sea never to return? Do you not see in the bright mirror of the high hall, grieving over white hair, in the morning like black silk, by evening turning to snow? When life is joyful, one must enjoy fully; do not let the golden goblet face the moon empty. Heaven gave me talents; they must be used. A thousand gold pieces scattered will return again. Cook sheep and slaughter cattle for pleasure; one must drink three hundred cups at a time. Cen Fu, Dan Qiusheng, bring the wine, do not stop the cups."
Letter to Admonish My Son
[Author] Zhuge Liang
The conduct of a gentleman: cultivate oneself with tranquility, nurture virtue with frugality. Without indifference, one cannot clarify ambition; without serenity, one cannot achieve far-reaching goals. Learning requires tranquility; talent requires learning. Without learning, one cannot broaden ability; without ambition, one cannot complete learning. Indolence and negligence cannot inspire diligence; recklessness and impatience cannot cultivate character. Time flies with age, and will fades with days, eventually becoming withered and unconnected to the world, sadly guarding the poor hut, what is there to regret!
Short Song Style
[Author] Cao Cao
Facing wine, sing a song; how long is life? Like the morning dew, the past days are many and bitter. Melancholy and generous, worries are hard to forget. How to relieve worries? Only Du Kang. The blue collar of the students, my heart is long for them. But for your sake, I have pondered until now. The deer cry out, eating the wild apple. I have honored guests; I play the zither and blow the sheng. Bright as the moon, when can I grasp it? Worries come from within, unceasing. Crossing paths and fields, you have come to visit me. Meeting after long separation, remembering old favors. The moon is bright, stars are sparse; magpies fly south. Circling the tree three times, on which branch can they rest? The mountain never tires of height, the sea never tires of depth. The Duke of Zhou spat out his food, and all under heaven turned to him.
Viewing the Vast Sea
Author: Cao Cao
Eastward I climb Jieshi to view the vast sea. The water ripples, the mountain islands stand tall. Trees grow thick, grasses flourish. Autumn wind sighs, huge waves surge. The sun and moon's journey seems to come from within it. The Milky Way's brilliance seems to emerge from it. How fortunate! Let me sing to express my will.
